News - Election of new Assistant Bishop for Australia
New Bishop is elected by the Ecumenical Patriarchate
The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate has unanimously elected Archimandrite Iakovos Tsigounis with the title of Militoupolis (Militoupoleos), as an Assistant Bishop to His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia.
His Grace Bishop-elect Iakovos of Militoupolis, (Militoupoleos) is 44 years old and a graduate of the St Andrew’s Theological College in Sydney. He serves as a Parish Priest of the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of Sts Anargyroi Oakleigh in Melbourne.
The Bishop-elect was ordained to the Diaconate and the Presbyterate by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, who gave him the name of his own late Geronta Metropolitan Iakovos of Iconium, the Dean of the Theological School of Halki when Archbishop Stylianos was a student there.
This February St. Andrew's Theological College in Sydney, will mark the 25th anniversary of its opening and it is a most fortunate occurrence that the Theological College will have in its midst its first graduate hierarch – His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Militoupolis (Militoupoleos), the first Australian-born bishop.
In the three-person list which was prepared, 2 other Archimandrites of Australia were added from the catalogue that Archbishop Stylianos had submitted. They were:
Archimandrite Nektarios Zormbalas (75 years old) and Archimandrite Eleftherios Kambourakis (35 years old).
The vote of the absent (due to illness) Metropolitan of Buenos Aires Tarasios was given to the Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal Polycarp, whilst the Officiator (Ierourgos) during the process of the canonical election was Metropolitan Theolyptos of Iconium.
